Antenatal referrals are normally made by an obstetrician or a midwife on a delivery unit. A computer database is used to document antenatal transfer requests. Demographic details you will be asked to provide include:
- Name of referring clinician and job title
- Referring hospital and contact number
- Mother's name, address and postcode
- Mother's local hospital number or NHS number
- Mother's DOB
- Current gestation
- Whether foetal or neonatal surgery will be required
- The type of care the mother will require
- The type of care the baby/babies will require
A screenshot of the clinical information required can be found [here] (the screenshot will open in a new window - simply close the window to return to this page).

Making an Antenatal Referral
- Make sure that the mother is willing to be transferred
- Telephone the cot bureau on 0161 276 8847, request the transfer and provide the required details
- The cot bureau will contact appropriate neonatal units and delivery suites in order of proximity to the referring hospital
- When an appropriate hospital is found that can accomodate both mother and infant(s) the cot bureau will telephone the referring hospital with the details
- The referring Obstetric Consultant or SpR should then contact the accepting Consultant or SpR (according to local hospital policy) so that a more in-depth discussion of the case can take place BEFORE arrangements are made to transfer the mother
- Once the accepting Consultant or SpR has formally agreed to the transfer then the referring unit should arrange an ambulance and midwife escort to transport the mother
- Please print out and complete Audit Form A and Audit Form C and fax them to the cot bureau on: 0161 276 6451
(The forms will open in a new browser window - simply close it to return to this page)
