Referrals to St. Mary's for Total Body Hypothermia

St. Mary's Hospital is now accepting referrals from within the Greater Manchester Network for treatment with Total Body Hypothermia for infants with confirmed hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy. An information pack on this service including eligibility criteria is available here. The cot bureau coordinator will ask the referring clinician for the following details:

  • Name of referring clinician and job title
  • Referring hospital and contact number
  • Infant's name, address and postcode
  • Infant's local hospital number or NHS number
  • Infant's gestation & date and time of birth
  • Infant's clinical status

Once these details have been provided the cot bureau coordinator will pass the call on to a transport clinician who will:

  • Ensure the infant meets the eligibility criteria by going through the eligibility checklist
  • Take a brief clinical history
  • Check that the Neonatal Medical Unit has a bed and the cooling apparatus available

Making a Hypothermia Transfer Request

Please note: under normal circumstances referrals for hypothermia treatment should be made within 1hr of birth

  1. Inform the parents that the transfer may be taking place and give them the parent information leaflet
  2. Ensure that the medical and nursing transfer letters have been completed, blood results / gas charts etc have been photocopied and that any x-rays and EEG/CFM traces are available (CD or hard copy)
  3. Telephone the cot bureau on 0161 276 8847, request the transfer and provide the required details
  4. Enquiries as to cot and cooling equipment availability will then be made
  5. The transport clinician will telephone the referring unit to discuss the case, ensuring that the infant meets the eligibility criteria and collect the required clinical information and give any appropriate advice
  6. The transport team will now call an ambulance and mobilise once it arrives
